I don't smoke marijuana but believe it should be legalized. It should be regulated just as are alcohol products. Plus, the state loves to tax everything it regulates, so both the state and federal could share in the wealth.
But probably the most important reason to legalize it is so that safety and quality can be ensured. Just as there was low-quality alcohol around during prohibition, the same is true with marijuana.
Ditto Woodrow If I might add, legalizing marijuana(and other drugs) will save thousands, perhaps millions of lives, both here and abroad. Drug gang violence in Mexico is out of control. The violence associated with drugs is from the drug trade, not from drug use.
Also, it's not up to beauracrats to tell individuals what they can and can't put in their body, especially when the beauracrats are a bunch of uptight elitists drinking martinis for lunch
FrankLowe - Interesting point, but I would make one distinction very clear. Marijuana is not a narcotic, if that's what you mean when you say drugs. I am not in favor of legalizing/de-criminalizing narcotics, as in heroin, meth, or cocaine.
Legal??? What is Legal, it simply means that the lawmakers haven't devised a way to tax the hell out of it. They need to grow it and tax it!! They need to sell It and Tax it!! When they figure that out it will be legal!!
There already is a synthetic medical marijuana called Marinol derived from THC, however, its a prescription only drug. I guess the powers that be don't want competition with 'Big Pharma' by letting individuals grow their own medicine perhaps?
