I think the spin-offs of the original show may have hurt their ratings. Even with the changes in actors over the years, I still think the original is the best and still watch the reruns whenever I catch them. It's like watching 2 shows in one... the cop show first, the prosecutor's show after that. Great concept, good show. It lasted 20 years, no easy task in today's revolving door of lousy shows on TV! I will miss it.

I enjoyed all three L&O's very much (I don't count such failures as Trial by Jury, Conviction, and the British L&O as true L&O series so much as hail marys). SVU was a slightly different format than the original, but no less entertaining. Criminal Intent hasn't quite grabbed my attention like the other two - D'Onofrio got a bit overdramatized after a while - but I did enjoy the episodes with Chris Noth and the new ones with Jeff Goldblum. I think one of the best things about each new season of L&O was to see who was returning, who was gone, and who replaced them. I will sorely miss new episodes of my favorite legal drama. Meanwhile, it will probably be replaced by some idiotic show like Trauma (which has no basis in reality, despite what they pretend to "know" about my field).

UPDATE: I'm very excited! I just saw a commercial last night advertising for a new series this fall on NBC Wednesdays...Law & Order: Los Angeles! Hopefully this will be a well-done series, not another failure like Conviction or Trial By Jury. It'll be kind of an odd change - L&O fans have always considered NYC to be the "sixth man," so to speak in the series. But at least it means L&O will live on!
