It's not that this sort of thing hasn't gone on in the Catholic church for probably centuries, because it has... but rather the cover-up which is what bothers me the most. Be open and honest and take care of the matter, don't try to pretend its not happening. Disgusting! And yes, I have lost my Catholic-based faith over this! Sad, but true.

The sex scandals did not cause me to lose confidence in the church. The fact that the church allows people to join the military and kill people but excommunicates people who perform or have an abortion did. Too inconsistent for me. Isn't the church afraid that someone in the military will drop a bomb on a pregnant woman and cause the death of an unborn child?

The scandal is bad, very bad, but the cover up is far worst. Church leaders talk a very good talk, but they certainly don’t follow what they preach. I have no confidence in the leadership in the Catholic church.

Keeping clerical sexual abuse "secret" for fear of scandal bespeaks of CYA vs. concern for the victims. It causes me to lose confidence in Church leaders.
Reassigning priest pedophiles knowing their background and moreover letting them continue to consecrate the host borders on hyprocrisy. More reason to lose confidence in the Church.
Sexual abuse may be looked upon as a "sin of weakness" on the part of the priest but is much worse than that becauses it causes untold psychological distress on the victims, in some cases, for life.
I was an altar boy molestation victim (in the sacristy of the church after Mass, no less). It took me 40 years before I even talked about it. It's one of those things you repress but never forget. More reason to lose confidence when one sees it happen even today?

Do you home school your children, not allowing them in any group events that you don't personally supervise their every move because of teachers being accused and convicted of molesting children? Do you not attend ANY church because of ministers of ALL faith's being accused of molesting children?

People need to teach their children what appropriate behavior by adults and people in general is and that children can't be afraid to talk with an adult they trust if something questionable happens. There is a lot more training going on in churches and groups in general about how to spot questionable behavior and how to react to it. Churches and groups are also changing policies so kids aren't alone with 1 adult anymore.

I don't condemn the Catholic church as a whole any more than I condemn people from the Middle East because of the actions of fanatics against Americans.
