It is way past time for the Catholic Church to allow priests to marry! Maybe if they allowed this, more people would want to become priests and/or join the church.

Ok, I'll take the bait, Al. How does a happily married man who happens to be a priest not reflect these so-called values you speak of? And you spelled Barack wrong. What happened to the values of reading, writing and arithmetic? And spelling?

personally, I really don't give a flying fig...as all of this will be resolved when each and every person, in a church or not will stand before their creator...and face the music..but like Alfred E Newman used to say " what ? me worry ?"

People should fear the day they have to stand before the Lord..the hypocrites, the ones that think they are good in there own eyes and are worthy of Heaven, the ones who continually mock God..but remember God is not mocked, he will repay those for there sin..God us a God of love, that is why Christ came to die for sinners, but God is a God of holiness and justice and one who is without Christ in there lives will not enter the kingdom of Heaven..man , women or child..

To be clear, I am not a Catholic but have never believed that the celibacy requirement was realistic. It may in fact be at the root of many of the church's current problems.

Without a lengthy rehashing of those problems, I'll just say that the policy is only policy and not demanded by scripture. The church itself has waffled on the requirement over the centuries. It is true that the current policy has been "status quo" for about 800 years.

While I don't condone the priest's affair. In fact I know nothing about his specific situation. I think society would benefit if more families were raised by morally grounded parents.

We're on the same page GONNAMAKEIT! Maybe when this particular priest meets his Creator, God will say, oh, you never married?... that's too bad, and the priest will answer, but God, I couldn't, it's in the doctrine that priests can't marry, and God will say, what?, I never said that!!... and boom will go the thunder! If I remember my studies correctly, it was a long forgotten Pope who pronounced that doctrine because he couldn't stand to see his priests going out every night and having fun! Old fuddy-duddy!

Some of you guys are so funny! When exactly did it become a religious value/moral that a priest cannot engage in a normal healthy sexual relationship? Why is it that a man has to be able to reject a woman in order to be pure enough for GOD? For all you religious fanatics, FYI, this is not biblical command but a rule made by an organization to meet a job description requirement.

I have a different theory that explains why NOT having sex is immoral. Since it DOES says in the Bible we were all created in GOD’s image and we as humans have natural biological sexual desire’s, then to not have sex would be to reject a part of GOD that is reflected in ourselves.

esteban makes a good point...assuming there is a creator.

"You know how I know that you don't know what happens when you die? Because I don't know. And you do not posses a supernatural power that I do not"

Let them get married. I'll echo nygirl's thoughts.

Actually the reasons that they stopped the priests from marrying was that priests were leaving church property to their heirs upon their death. It is always about money.....

Rick,
Thank you for an excellent response. The only additions I could make is that some Catholic Rites allow married priests. There are two Ukranian Catholic Churches here in the area, Watervliet and Amsterdam. Those here are free to join.

"Whoever wishes to follow me must deny his very self..." (Luke 9:23) Love means sacrifice, freely given, not begrudging as Jesus showed from the cross.

Thanks Rick for a good post.

Priests and Nuns pledge celibacy to God when they are ordained and admitted into the church. If a person has different views, then attend a different church.

The Bible also states that leaders are held to a higher standing. We should have more of this everywhere.

Rick,

That was a great post. The church shouldn't change the rules because some individuals can't keep their commitment. As far as the pedophilia issue goes, priests do not resort to molesting children because they can't get married, they do it because they are child molesters.

I am a practicing Roman Catholic. I think priests SHOULD be allowed to marry. Other religions, including other Christian and Catholic religions, allow their clergy members to marry. If those servants of God can marry and still serve their faithful with the result of good, happy, productive congregations, why can't priests of the Roman Catholic faith? I think in this age of shrinking parishes and declining numbers of priests the pope would wake up to the needs of 21st century America.

Priests used to be able to be married. Being a priest was a privilege only the wealthy experienced. But when they died the money went to their family. The Catholic Church wanted the money to be left to them. That's why they can't be married. Grease the palms of the Catholic Church and they will change the interpretation of the Bible for you.
In 500 years people will believe Scientology is true also..... can't wait to read the responses.

I think priests should be able to marry. The idea is long overdue and badly needed. As many have stated, celibacy started via a Papal decree centuries ago. It's time to change that once and for all.

What about gay marriage? Put that one in the mix.

It's very difficult to argue the divine and God. Years ago, I quit smoking cold turkey and never wanted to smoke again and I did it with prayer. It amazed me.
