The police department is in poor shape as it is.

It takes courage to be a police officer but it also takes courage to stand behind your work ethics and buck the system as it is now and I don't see that happening. Fellow officers are letting themselves down and our community.

Why is it that it takes a news organization or a private citizen to point out abuses by officers. Where are their fellow officers I am sure their fellow officers know who the abusers are.

If Albany can fire officers why can't we? Kick out those that break the law. Like alleged stealing money for wages not worked or driving drunk. Any officer breaking the a law should be let go. No if's, and's or buts.

I say give the Commissioner and Chaires another year before seriously considering abolishing the police force. I think they are organizing and working towards cleaning things up. We need to support them.

There is a need to have consistency to effect change. I just hope we don't lose Bennett because putting someone else in the same position will not make things better. The new person would take on the same abuses and have to start all over.

Give the team another year and then think about abolishing it.

Hey jlynn092882 - abolishing the Schenectady police department doesn't mean that there will be NO police in Schenectady - it means that another law enforcement agency will will have jurisdiction in the city.

This is a move that is long over due.

I'm with "dranon", I don't go to Schenectady unless I absolutely have to.

I posted this morning but somehow it got deleted. For what? Telling the truth? The police force is an embarrassment to the City of Schenectady. It is time to go with the Sheriff's department. How many times do you have to read in the Gazette about another officer doing wrong while on duty. Now is the time to act.

I think a few have spoiled the barrel in Schenectady... while most officers have morals and character I think they've been diminished over the years. The "good ones" have been exposed to corruption, have turned their cheeks and even assisted the "bad ones" through the loyalty clause. In the meantime crime has escalated and the officers digressions continue. Chaires means well but I believe its too late for him to be effective. The only way out is to deunionize and replace the current leaders of the department (which is probobly impossible). It's just sad to think these officers have neglected to make Schenectady a better place to live and instead opted to drag her down.

I am impressed by the new Chief at the Schenectady Police Dept. and I feel with time, and a NEW mayor with the same backbone and grit that the Chief seems to have, the police dept. could and needs to be turned around for the sake of the community. The Sheriff's Dept. is in no position to take over the dept. They have their own problems, they can't even take care of the jail. The barely get over the embarrassment of the correction guard fiasco back in the 80/90's, and they are back paying off prisioners to be quiet again due to abuse while in their jail system.
The children in the community need officers they can look up to, and respect. The officers who show up everyday and do their jobs, because of a love of the job and a sense of duty to the community need our support, and respect. The new Chief trying to weed out the rotten apples, and turn the department around also needs our support, and our voices to push beyond the PBA union preventing the changes and keeping these rotten officers on the job and payroll.

I hope that the general public realizes that the officers that have been in the limelight recently account for a very small percentage of the police dept. These officers add up to less then 5% of the police force. And just so the facts are right 5% of the force is 8 people which btw not even that many have been in the news as of late. The total officers in the news have been 5 or 6!!!! How could you possibly hold an entire dept. responsible for actions of so FEW?!? And another thing how could you disband the entire agency when only 5% of its employees have been in the limelight as of late? That’s a standard you could probably hold any agency at. And at this rate you would have to get rid of police departments nationwide. All of the people bashing the SPD need to take a step back and realize that they do good things. Half of the officers in the news have made bad decisions when they were not on company time. Were some of them not so smart by doing things on company time? Yes, but that does not make them bad officers. It means they made bad choices. But you know the next time your in Schenectady and someone decides to make you a victim who are you going to call? Your mother? I don’t think so. You’re going to call the police and then you’re going to remember all the horrible things you said about them and how willing they will be to help you. Oh but then when your the victim they don't seem so bad. And you thank them and go on your way. So the next time you get threatened or shot at and the police respond don't be shocked if they go above and beyond their call of duty to help you out. Why would you want to abolish the SPD? Give me 5 acceptable reasons.
A GOOD COPS FEELINGS:
You 69% have to be the most ignorant citizens in the state of NY. Do you have any idea what it feels like to spend 15 years or more as a police officer in the City of Sch'dy? Medals, awards, commendations, every good deed ever done in that 15 year period thrown out the window and when someone who wouldn’t support the SPD gets in trouble and needs the police were there for you. Every good deed ever done by the fine officers of this city, noticed and unnoticed means nothing to you. When you ask where do you work? Schenectady. The response: Ohh your one of them. Pathetic. Get a clue. And you’re Welcome for all their hard work. - One of the few that believes in the good. (All of these opinions were written by a private citizen)

BLACKANDGOLD, WHEN YOU SAY ONLY 5 OR 6 HAVE BEEN IN THE NEWS RECENTLY, I CAN ONLY THINK THAT THESE ARE THE ONLY ONES CAUGHT SO FAR. I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN SCHENECTADY, BUT NEVER PLAN ON LIVING THERE AGAIN. THE STATE OF THE CITY INCLUDIG THE POLICE AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM ARE FAILING BECAUSE OF CITY LEADERSHIP, YOU ALL NEED TO STOP CRYING THAT YOUR HANDS ARE TIED BECAUSE OF THE UNION CONTRACT AND DO SOMETHING!! IF ONLY 6% OF THE COPS ARE THE PROBLEM WHAT ARE THE OTHER 94% DOING TO CLEAN IT UP, IF YOU CAN'T CLEAN UP WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT UNDER YOUR OWN NOSES IN YOUR OWN DEPT. (ON OR OFF DUTY) HOW ARE CAPABLE OF CLEANING UP THE CRIME IN THE CITY. 94% VS 6%, THE ODDS ARE IN YOUR FAVOR BUT YOU'RE STILL NOT GETTING IT DONE. IT'S JUST SAD! STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND DO YOUR JOBS, PERIOD.

If the Schenectady police force is committed to cleaning up their act let them show it. They have a choice now work to fix themselves or disappear. They system has been setup to protect the rotting apple and gold brickers at the expense of the entire barrel. The system has a cancer and they themselves have to make the hard choice to cure it.

I give them 2 choices. Apply to the Sheriff's office or change your contract to allow bad officers to be fired. Not the system now where you could basically snort coke on the arbitrators desk and still keep your job.

They need to know that they can be suspended for more then 30 without pay, the chief can fire them and unless they can prove abuse they are gone.If an officer is arrested their pay should stop that day. No more of the well maybe the penalty was to harsh. When you are gone, you are gone!
