I think this is a perfectly legitimate question.
So do the more than 230 voters who have taken part in the poll.
Not everybody goes to the track, and for the people who do go, not everybody bets.
It's always the same three or four people who take issue with these questions each week, and yet you all keep coming back.

Actually enest, I don’t take issue with the question each week and as a matter of fact I wouldn’t consider it an "issue." We were poking fun at the question-there is a big difference.

Are you aware that there is a war going on? Or maybe bring it closer to home...are you aware that our entire US economy is in the worst situation it has been in decades? Are you aware that mortgage foreclosures and bankruptcies are at an all time high? Are you aware that the tax rate in NYS is amongst the highest in the country? Are you aware that small businesses are closing at an unprecedented rate?

I don’t really care what questions the Daily Gazette asks, I would just hope that they would be of a little more substance, to make people aware, and get people talking and finding common ground with each other. The Gazette is after all a “news” agency. Asking people if they bet at a race track has nothing to do with current events or news. Last I checked the Gazatte was not a polling place for the race track.

Oh and one more thing....

"Not everybody goes to the track, and for the people who do go, not everybody bets."

Did you all ready know this before the question was asked or did it take the poll to figure that out? Im sure you knew before the question and thats exactly why we are poking fun at this question because everyone all ready knows that "Not everybody goes to the track, and for the people who do go, not everybody bets."

To those of you critical of some of our poll topics, I offer these comments as the person who usually picks the questions:

As the overall philosophy of this Web site is to focus on local news and issues, so do I try to maintain that focus with the polls. Thus, schdygirl, you are not likely to often find a poll on the war or other national and international stories unless there is some local connection, such as when we asked if gas prices would change holiday travel plans.

In addition, we try to connect our polls as often as possible to stories or other projects on the Web site, thus the choice of the betting poll while we are running a series on handicapping.

While you may find some of these polls stupid or inane, I have found them all to offer at least some insight. In this latest case, I was truly surprised by how many people don't go to the track. And that insight is what these polls are all about, whether it's about a topic you care about or not.

And, by the way, for those of you who are throwing stones, I certainly would welcome YOUR suggestions, as long as you remember the above guidelines. So, no, schdygirl, we won't be doing a poll asking how quickly you think we should pull the troops out of Iraq or whether you think the federal government is doing enough to address the mortgage crisis.

However, you will see future polls on such local issues as the use of eminent domain to take land for public projects like the Saratoga County water line (there's your spoiler for tomorrow).

What's the point of going if you're not gonna bet? I guess I can see that some people just like horses, but me, I need a rooting interest or I'm not interested.

Lighten up on Schdygirl.....we are just here to pass time and have fun.....no one said anything disrespectful.....It just seemed like an odd question.....Of course we realize not everyone who goes bets......however those numbers are small.....like the number of people who go to vegas and dont bet......really people.....everyone take a deep breath and calm down

If you wanted to focus on Saratoga mrobarge, why didn't you just ask how many people plan on going to the track this year......simple
