I don't think so, Coach Mike. Some people are curbing their driving this holiday weekend and others are not.

Some people are saving money other ways.

It was just reported that holiday traffic will be down for the first time in 10 years this weekend. So, no, I don't think this is a stupid question.

I always remember what my teachers told me in grade school: "There are no stupid questions."

I agree Elysia. Also, coachmike: Why are you so angry? Fyi, using all-caps on the web is considered yelling. Before you embarass yourself any further, why don't you check out http://www.albion.com/netiquette/

Actually no im not angry..lol..just making the comment in boldness, to let my opinion be known not in a soft tone. And yes sometimes there are stupid questions that people ask ! Even if one is well off financially, the gas prices do affect ones situation, you have to make more to spend more. Dr.. First of all I did nothing to embarass myself and I have etiquette , maybe you should check out you atitude of rudeness and ask my reason for asserting my opinion instead of making your judgment of me. As my statement is not yelling but making a statement of surprise.

I'm weary of the news media forecasting a bleak future. There are many good activities that can be done close to home. Actually getting to know your area's history can be as fun as it can be enlightening. Perhaps helping a neighbor with your company or inviting someone to your backyard for sharing could bring joy in great ways. This could be an exceptional holiday for those who can give and those who receive. Happy Fourth! God Bless America!

Does the media know how to do anything but forcast a bleak future? Negativity seems to be the name of the game in this business. Fear sells!
annarondac- you are right, this area is rich with history along with dozens of free/low cost activities. The parks, free concerts, art night, etc are making Schenectady a nicer place to be.
My family used to travel to Albany's events but did not participate much in what Schenectady had to offer. This is changing! I guess a positive side to the oil price increase is a possible strengthening of communities.

We are curtailing driving, not only on the holiday, but every day.
We are also aware of the various festivals, museums, etc. in the area. We really like the variety of cultural events that are available, and appreciate the great number of free ones. The Internet can help you find out details for things like local free theater productions, concerts, parades, etc. I do note that I find pointers from the Gazette, and then we record what/where we want to go on a seasonal calendar. So far, we've got at least 5 plays we're planning to see for free. There is one that costs a lot that we do want to go to -- but it's the free ones that allow us to do that!
I have friends who come out from Chicago and are amazed at what we do have to offer here. There's nothing to be ashamed of in our area's cultural offerings! We can stand up with the best of them.

Dave, that is why we should give thanks that we have a great country. We can disagree in a civil manner. Happy Birthday America!
