Manny Ycaza, Bobby Ussery and Braulio Baeza were on horseback at Saratoga Race Course on Monday, Aug. 2, 1965. Anthony Morette, Milton C. Kling and Anthony Tripoli were on holiday — all made sure they were part of the opening day crowd of 16,009. People in the grandstand and clubhouse were in good moods. “The fans expressed approval of the $3.5 million expansion program concentrated in the grandstand area,” wrote Bob Castle, who covered racing for the Schenectady Gazette. “Since last August’s meeting a new addition — 500 feet long — has been added to that section. The plant now will comfortably accommodate 30,000 to 35,000 spectators.” The addition included two new escalators and a dining area for grandstand patrons.
