Faces in the crowd — some pensive, some passive — watch a race at Saratoga Race Course on opening day, Aug. 2, 1965. Saratoga, celebrating the 150th anniversary of racing in the city this year, opened for its annual summer meet this past Friday.
Manny Ycaza, Bobby Ussery and Braulio Baeza were on horseback at Saratoga Race Course on Monday, Aug. 2, 1965.
Anthony Morette, Milton C. Kling and Anthony Tripoli were on holiday — all made sure they were part of the opening day crowd of 16,009.
People in the grandstand and clubhouse were in good moods.
“The fans expressed approval of the $3.5 million expansion program concentrated in the grandstand area,” wrote Bob Castle, who covered racing for the Schenectady Gazette. “Since last August’s meeting a new addition — 500 feet long — has been added to that section. The plant now will comfortably accommodate 30,000 to 35,000 spectators.”
The addition included two new escalators and a dining area for grandstand patrons.
