Bets and beauties made headlines 40 years ago this month. In July 1973, racing fans received an assist for their wagers. Schenectady Off-Track Betting invented a portable parlor — the “Bet Mobile.” Other people were more interested in art, beauty, athletics and recreation. Arts and crafts created by teens at Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant and Linton High Schools were on display in City Hall. Others preferred art in motion, and traveled to the SPAC to watch the New York City Ballet. Beauty was on display at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. Ten teenagers participated in the Miss Black Teenage Pageant on July 14. Some young people splashed waves to help smash cancer.
