Tom Czaban had a heart when it came to hubcaps. During the winter of 1978, a large pothole in front of his Freeman’s Bridge Road business caused shakedowns for dozens of wheel covers. Czaban and friends Dennis Schaefer and John Vogel picked up the hubcaps, and Czaban made the accessories an advertised special in front of his used-car lot.
Czaban put up a sign for motorists whose cars and trucks had sustained bumps and losses — hubcap retrieval was free.
For other people, valentine hearts, clearning fire hydrants, writing and participating in the school color guard were big deals.
