When Pat Goodale returns from a trip, her friends don’t ask to see the photos she took. They want to see her sketchbook journal — a diary of people, places and memorable moments that she compiles while on the road. Posted on March 22, 2008.
Saratoga Springs artist Pat Goodale with a stack of her travel sketchbooks. On her trips to faraway places, Goodale captures the essence of her experiences in drawings with pen and paper. She sometimes will add watercolor washes in the evenings after a day of touring.
This colorful hacienda at El Fuerte caught her eye in Copper Canyon, Mexico. “The hacienda was just spectacular,” she said, noting that the location was extremely colorful and loaded with artifacts.
In Spain, Goodale set about drawing the ceiling of the Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba. “The arches looked like peppermint candy canes” and were “challenging to draw,” she noted.

In Turkey, Goodale was on a tour boat during a memorable storm on the Mediterranean Sea. The frightening storm lasted two hours with everyone huddled below deck and water coming in under the doors, she said. To distract herself, Goodale drew the whole time.
Afterwards, “the captain said that was the second worst storm he ever sailed in,” she said.
