Saratoga Springs Fire Department can bring back or replace seven firefighters who were laid off in January for at least two years thanks to a $663,705 federal grant announced Thursday morning at the fire house. The funding came through a competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and was announced by Sen. Charles Schumer, Rep. Scott Murphy and other public officials at the Saratoga Springs Fire Department on Lake Avenue.
The grant will pay for the salaries and benefits of seven firefighters through 2012, when the city would have to pay for the seven positions or apply for another grant, Schumer said.
