A new rest area opened Thursday on the New York State Thruway to provide travelers a chance to take a break from driving, eat food produced in the Mohawk Valley, and sit in the grass while they watch the day-to-day operations of a lock on the Erie Canal.
The family of an Amsterdam teenager who drowned on Great Sacandaga Lake last Saturday has started a memorial fund in his name to raise funds for increased search and rescue and dive operations in Fulton and Montgomery counties.

The city of Amsterdam has made temporary repairs to a sewage leak that began early last week, spilling at least 50 gallons of raw sewage per minute near the Chuctanunga Creek, according to state officials.
An audit by state Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli’s office found that the Greater Amsterdam School District consistently developed and adopted realistic budget estimates, but exceeded the limit for the district’s fund balance since the 2012-13 school year.
A half-million gallons of partially treated sewage spilled into the Mohawk River early Wednesday morning because of an equipment failure at the Westside Pump Station, according to an alert sent out by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
