Behind the Broadcast: TWCS coverage treats football fans

Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013
Some good news for high school football fans and bad news for college basketball fans in the Capital Region next weekend.

Behind the Broadcast: Martinez gets support to replace McCarver

Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013
The career of long-time Major League Baseball analyst Tim McCarver will be coming to an end as early as Monday, if the World Series ends then. He’s had a long career, and has been equally disliked by fans and liked.

Behind the Broadcast: Rivera documentary will inspire baseball fans

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013
Not many athletes are deserving of a documentary focusing on the final season of a Hall of Fame career. And not many athletes would probably tolerate having cameras following their every move.

Behind the Broadcast: ECAC Hockey getting no national exposure

Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013
There will be a lot of college hockey games on national television this year. As a person who covers the sport for this paper, I am ecstatic that the game is getting plenty of exposure.
But my enthusiasm is tempered because ECAC Hockey, the conference with the defending NCAA hockey champion and runner-up, has been left out in the cold.

Behind the Broadcast: Time Warner customers should keep channel guide handy

Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013
Time Warner Cable customers in the Capital Region will see some changes, beginning Tuesday, with regard to where they can find programming.

Behind the Broadcast: Calderone will be good fit at WTMM

Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013
When ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team (WTMM-FM) unceremoniously fired host Brian Sinkoff two years ago from his afternoon drive show, a lot of the local sportstalk seemed to be abandoned by the station.
Thankfully, the station is making up for that.

Behind the Broadcast: ESPN will televise regular-season college hockey games

Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013
Earlier this week, the Big Ten announced which college hockey game would be televised in the conference’s inaugural season.
What caught the attention of most college hockey fans wasn’t the 27 games the Big Ten Network will televise, which includes many double-headers on Friday nights.

Behind the Broadcast: NFL RedZone host loves his job

Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013
NFL fans probably want Scott Hanson’s job. I know I want it.

Behind the Broadcast: Jacobs' style didn't fit in market

Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013
The rock group AC/DC wrote the song “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” 33 years ago for their “Back In Black” album. As a big music fan, I agree with that.
But there can be noise pollution on the radio when it comes to loud, obnoxious sportstalk show hosts.

Behind the Broadcast: More turmoil at WTMM

Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013
It certainly has been an rough, interesting month for ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team (WTMM-FM).
The latest news came midday Friday, when Townsquare Media, owners of the station, announced that “Midday with Mike” host Mike Lindsley and producer Brian Cady were fired.

Behind the Broadcast: Even without dead heat, Travers won't lack for drama

Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013
Last year’s Travers Stakes produced just the second dead heat in history. So, what does the Travers do for an exciting encore?
Just have the top three horses battle for the “Mid-Summer Derby” title.

Lindsley should be held accountable by WTMM

Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013
It has been an interesting few days for ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team (WTMM-FM).
The station is bringing in a brand-new manager in Armen Williams. Late-afternoon host Bruce Jacobs announced he is leaving the station Sept. 6.
Normally, those two items would be major news. But after what happened on Monday’s “Midday with Mike” show, they were just mere blips on the radar screen.

Behind the Broadcast: NBC set to launch soccer coverage

Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013
It has been a great couple of weeks for NBC Sports Group. Last week, it announced it had secured part of the NASCAR TV package starting in 2015.
This week, NBC Sports Group announced its plans for the first few months of its English Premier Soccer League coverage. Let me just say that if you are a soccer fan here in the Capital Region, you will be happy, for the most part.

Behind the Broadcast: Popular 'Summer in Saratoga' series starts today

Saturday, July 27, 2013
The NBC Sports Group is set to start another season of its “Summer at Saratoga” series today. NBC Sports Network will have the Jim Dandy Stakes and the Diana Handicap starting at 5 p.m.

Olbermann focusing on sports again

Saturday, July 20, 2013
Keith Olbermann has had a very interesting broadcasting career.
Probably no one has had a more meteoric rise in sports and political news broadcasting, and no one has had more numerous spectacular implosions. Calling Olbermann’s broadcasting career checkered doesn’t even scratch the surface. More like volatile. Extremely volatile.
