— What do you do if you're running for governor and your Democratic primary opponent refuses to debate? Debate the Republican.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's two main rivals engaged Thursday in an unusual — and unusually friendly — debate, an exercise that allowed them to promote their campaigns while bonding over their shared dislike for Cuomo.

During the hour-long debate aired on WNYC radio, Republican Rob Astorino and Democrat Zephyr Teachout disagreed on economic development, education, natural gas exploration and nearly every other issue except for Cuomo, who has steadfastly refused to debate his opponents as he seeks a second term.

Earlier this week Cuomo dismissed the notion that debates are always good for voters, saying he's been in many that were a disservice to democracy.

The primary is Tuesday.
