Schenectady County Jail inmate death called suicide
SCHENECTADY An inmate at the Schenectady County Jail killed himself early Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s department said.
An investigation is under way, but the preliminary review indicates all policies and procedures were followed, department officials said.
Found dead was Lucky Lee Wilkins Jr., 29. He was booked into the jail March 14 on a charge of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $25,000.
He was discovered by a corrections officer sitting on his cell floor, hanging from a bar just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, officials said. The officer was conducting his normal rounds.
Wilkins had a sheet around his neck. The other end was tied to the bar at the top of the cell.
Supervisors, officers and medical staff responded. CPR was administered and continued until paramedics arrived.
The Schenectady Fire Department and Mohawk Ambulance responded. Wilkins was taken to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m.
The state Commission of Correction, which investigates all jail deaths, was notified.
