Arts Summer Preview/Jazz: Strong lineup at the Van Dyck

Some jazz shows you might not want to miss this summer, plus a full calendar of events:

-- The summer jazz season will begin with a bang on Thursday, June 5, when vocalist Jeanne O’Connor opens the free outdoor series Jazz on Jay on the Jay Street pedestrian mall in downtown Schenectady. That same night, the duo Tuck and Patti will perform at The Van Dyck on Union Street in Schenectady.

-- On June 28 and 29, the Freihofer’s Jazz Festival will take place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Among those scheduled to perform are Terence Blanchard, the Mary Halvorson Trio, Trombone Shorty and Newport Jazz Festival at 60, with Karrin Allyson, Anat Cohen, Randy Brecker, Larry Grenadier and Clarence Penn.

-- Skidmore College’s Summer Jazz Institute will have some new faculty members this year, including saxophonists Antonio Hart and Jimmy Green. In addition to two concerts each by the faculty and students, guest artists will be the Rufus Reid Quintet on July 1 and the Gary Smulyan Trio on July 8.

-- Besides Tuck and Patti, The Van Dyck will host some other outstanding performers during June and July, including Stanley Jordan, Harry Allen, the Bria Skonberg Band and the Jazz Guitar Summit featuring Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden and Gerry Beaudoin.

-- On Aug. 17, the series Jazz in the Valley will present an all-star lineup at Wayans Park in Poughkeepsie with Bobby Watson, Steve Turre, Lewis Nash, Eddie Henderson, Buster Williams, George Cables and Javon Jackson.
