Sewage spill closes some Long Island beaches
NEW YORK — Sewage runoff is closing beaches and suspending shellfish harvesting on New York's Long Island.
Nassau County officials say Friday's spill forced them to shut down Centre Island Beach, Centre Island Sound, Soundside Beach and West Harbor Beach in Bayville, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beach in Oyster Bay and Laurel Hollow Beach in Laurel Hollow.
State environmental officials say they've temporarily halted shellfish harvesting in Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor.
They say the ban will remain in effect until they determine water quality is suitable for the harvest of shellfish for human consumption.
