— A Palatine resident chased down a man trying to steal his truck early Wednesday, then held him for sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

The incident happened just before 4 a.m. on Brower Road in the town of Palatine, Montgomery County sheriff’s officials said.

The resident reported he caught a man stealing his pickup truck from the front of his house, crashing it into an ornamental bench in the process. The resident ran after the man and caught him, then held him to await deputies.

The suspect was identified as Michael T. Patterson, 21, of 828 Stone Arabia Road, Palatine.

Deputies also determined he was intoxicated after he failed field sobriety tests, officials said.

He was charged with one count each of third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal mischief and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, all felonies, as well as misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

Patterson was recently convicted of driving while ability impaired, which resulted in him being without a valid driver’s license, officials said, and the aggravated unlicensed operation count.

Patterson was arraigned in Palatine Town Court and ordered held on $15,000 bail.
