— The son of the owner of a horse killed by an arrow in Westerlo early Sunday has been arrested on a weapons possession count, the Sheriff’s Department said, but not charged with causing the horse's death.

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence in the horse killing, including whether DNA can be recovered from the arrow, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said.

Shawn M. Duncan, 35, of Knox, was arrested after evidence at the scene led investigators to his home, Apple said. He declined to identify that evidence.

Investigators searched his residence with a warrant and found a stun gun, about 15 grams of marijuana and several bows and arrows.

The stun gun resulted in a charge of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony. The charge was upgraded because Duncan has a prior felony conviction, Apple said.

State records show Duncan was convicted in Albany County in 1996 of attempted burglary. He was released from state prison in 1998.

He also faces a violation-level count of unlawful possession of marijuana.

The investigation began when the owners of the horse discovered it dead Sunday morning with a target arrow embedded 12 to 14 inches into its chest, Apple said.

Whoever is charged in the horse’s death is expected to face multiple felonies, he added.

Duncan was arraigned and ordered held without bail. He is to reappear in court Wednesday.
