— When a payroll manager was confronted with proof that she was stealing, she didn't confess or deny her guilt.

Instead, she offered a $10,000 bribe if they fired her quietly instead of calling police.

Now she’s going to spend the next three to nine years in state prison.

Hillary Downey, 35, of Clifton Park, pleaded guilty this spring to two counts of grand larceny, involving two separate businesses. She was sentenced Thursday.

The first criminal count was based on her work at Children’s Place at the Plaza in Albany. Downey falsified checks and cashed them, as well as stealing cash, for a total theft of $11,047. Her boss fired her.

She then got a job at Secure Solutions LLC. Over the course of five months, she embezzled more than $72,000 by falsifying business and payroll records.

When officials from her company found out and confronted her, she offered them $10,000 not to report the crime, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Bethlehem Police learned of the matter while investigating Downey. As part of her sentence, she must pay full restitution to both companies. She owes them $83,321.
