— An Amsterdam man drowned Sunday while trying to swim across the Mohawk River in Little Falls, police said.

Michael Flowers, 21, was on Moss Island with friends when they decided to swim the river. Flowers jumped in with a friend, but tired and drowned about 20 feet from the other shore, police said.

The friend tried to save him and a passer-by called 911. Firefighters searched the water for him immediately upon their arrival but could not find him, police said.

Three hours later, his body was found at the bottom of the river, about 35 feet deep, by the St. Johnsville Fire Department Water Rescue and Dive Team.

Police said there was no indication of drug or alcohol use. Flowers had been spending the day on the island with fellow students from Herkimer County Community College, police said.
