— Federal authorities have arrested a local orthopedic surgeon for allegedly writing prescriptions for hundreds of oxycodone pills in exchange for thousands of dollars in cash.

Dr. Jeffrey Gundel, 49, of Gansevoort, is charged with unlawful distribution of oxycodone. He was released on conditions following his appearance in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.

Gundel, who practices in the Glens Falls and Saratoga Springs areas, allegedly met with a federal informant at a Stewart’s Shop in Wilton on two occasions in March and April. During the first meeting, on March 22, Gundel was given $2,400 in cash in exchange for a prescription he had previously written for a third party, according to investigators.

During the meeting, Gundel wrote another prescription to an individual he hadn’t treated in his capacity as a doctor, federal investigators said. The prescription called for 240 pills of oxycodone, 30 milligrams in size.

Gundel returned to the Stewart’s on April 4 to meet with the informant a second time, according to federal investigators, who said the doctor took another $2,400 for a previously written prescription and then penned two others to individuals he hadn’t treated in his capacity as a doctor.
