The first round of the NCAA men’s Division I lacrosse tournament is going to the dogs.

The Great Danes of the University at Albany will travel to Baltimore to take on the Loyola Greyhounds, the No. 3 seed, at noon Saturday.

The 18-team field was announced Sunday night.

“We are excited to be staying on the East Coast and playing a strong team like Loyola, one of the best in the nation,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr.

UAlbany earned an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament after defeating UMBC in the America East title game on Saturday. It will play the Greyhounds for the first time in the Division I era at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

“Going into last year, our expectations were that we just wanted be here. Now, we want to go further and win the national championship,” said UAlbany senior attack Ty Thompson.

Loyola, the Patriot League champion and No. 1 team in the USILA Coaches Poll, finished the year on a 15-game winning streak to enter the tournament at 15-1, and is two years removed from being the 2012 national champion.

Siena, the champion of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, also had an automatic bid, but the Saints were relegated to the play-in round. They will play at Bryant on Wednesday, with the winner facing Syracuse on Sunday.

Rochester Institute of Technology, ranked No. 1 in the nation in Division III, opened up an 8-3 lead at the half and defeated Union, 13-11, to win its third straight Liberty League championship.

Union (13-3) earned one of 10 at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and will host New England College (14-3), champion of the North Atlantic Conference, in a first-round game Wednesday at Frank Bailey Field. Game time is yet to be determined.

Women

Stony Brook’s defense limited the University at Albany to one goal — the fewest goals ever allowed in an America East tournament game — as the Seawolves won their second straight conference women’s championship, 7-1.

Freshman Sarah Martin gave the Great Danes the lead with a free-position goal at the 22:24 mark, but that was the only shot that got past Seawolves goalie Frankie Caridi, who was named the tournament MVP.

Stony Brook (16-3) earned an automatic bid to the 26-team NCAA Division I tournament.

Despite its 14-3 record, UAlbany didn’t receive an at-large bid.

Liberty League champion Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will make its third consecutive NCAA Division III tournament appearance when it travels to Fredonia State for a second-round game on Saturday.
