A post-season to savor
For fans of any sport, the post-season is always a great time of year. The games are meaningful, the players passionate and the competition strong — often fierce. It’s even better when a local team is in it — or, better still, a number of teams, as has been the case for Capital Region basketball and hockey fans the last few weeks.
Professional baseball and football are fine, but in this area, at least this time of year, it’s amateur basketball and hockey that generate the greatest interest and excitement.
And what a post-season it has been! In basketball both the University at Albany men’s and women’s basketball teams won their conference championship and made it to the NCAA tournament (the men for the first time advanced to the second round) before losing to better and more famous teams. A magnificent Scotia-Glenville boys’ basketball team won the New York state high school Class A and Federation championships to cap a perfect 27-0 season.
Then there’s the Union College men’s hockey team, which is still playing, having one its conference championship last weekend (for the third straight time), and about to participate in the NCAA East Regionals this coming weekend, hoping for its second trip in three years to the Frozen Four. They’re no longer a Cinderella Story, but a deep, experienced, talented team that has risen to the lofty heights of No. 1 in the country.
Good luck to the Dutchmen and congratulations to all.
