Fired-up Saints pull away from Seawolves

— Nothing like an old-fashioned scuffle to get the blood pumping.

A brief shoving match between Siena’s Rob Poole and Stony Brook’s Kameron Mitchell with 16:59 left in the game not only cleared the benches and resulted in a pair of double technical fouls by both teams, but it also sent Javion Ogunyemi, Maurice White and Evan Hymes to the showers for leaving the bench during the altercation.

The result was a 16-4 run that eventually carried the Saints to a spirited 66-55 victory over Stony Brook in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational Tuesday night before a crowd of 2,575 at the Times Union Center.

Siena (16-17) hosts the winner of today’s Hampton-Penn State game Monday at a time to be determined. Stony Brook, runner-up in the America East Conference tournament after losing to the University at Albany last Saturday, finishes 23-11.

Stony Brook held a 34-31 advantage after a sluggish first half by both teams, and after a three-pointer by Carson Puriefoy, the Seawolves took a 39-34 edge early in the second half.

When Brett Bisping bulled his way in for a layup at 16:59, a shoving match ensued, and after the benches cleared and order was finally restored — after a lengthy meeting by the officials to go over the replay of the altercation — the Saints took control behind a cheering partisan crowd.

“I guess the [scuffle] made a difference, because soon after that, it was foul, foul, foul,” said Stony Brook head coach Steve Piekiell. “It was a really physical game from the start. To Siena’s credit, they made their free throws. The physicality of the game was evident.”

“We were getting out-toughed in the first half,” said Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos. “I didn’t see what happened on that play, but you can’t leave the bench, and our guys know that. We had 2,575 people in the arena get very loud after that thing happened. The crowd was into it.”

The Saints eventually pulled out to a 65-50 advantage and coasted the rest of the way.

Poole finished with 20 points, while Bisping contributed 17 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Saints.

“Whether we won or lost, this was a good experience for us,” said Patsos. “In the CBI handbook I was looking at, the average is 7-8 teams go to the postseason the next year. We were representing the MAAC, and this was for our league.

“Our players appreciated playing in another game,” Patsos added.

“It’s nice to get a postseason win,” said Poole, who refused to discuss exactly what happened between he and Mitchell. “When we lost three of our best players off the bench, the other guys had to pick them up.”

Poole admitted it was a little difficult to get into the flow of the game after being on spring break last week.

“It’s weird. We literally took a week off, and they [the Seawolves] played just last week. Maybe they were a little let down after what happened to them on Saturday.”

Siena is now 14-11 in postseason play.
