LOCKPORT, N.Y. — A western New York man is among 24 war veterans who will receive the Medal of Honor following a congressionally mandated review to ensure recipients weren't bypassed because of prejudice.

Relatives of the late Staff Sgt. William F. Leonard of Lockport plan to accept the award from President Barack Obama during a ceremony in Washington on Tuesday.

Leonard is being honored for his actions on Nov. 7, 1944 in France. The Army says then-Pfc. Leonard was a squad leader with the 30th Infantry when he led members of his squad on an assault on German forces, killing two snipers and a machine-gun crew despite being shot.

Congress ordered the review of records of Jewish and Hispanic recipients of the Service Cross for possible upgrade to the Medal of Honor.
