— A woman died this afternoon after breaking through the ice in the Hudson River near Haviland Cove, Glens Falls police said.

The woman was brought to shore through a rescue effort by police and fire personnel just before 1 p.m. but died after being transported to Glens Falls Hospital, police said. Her name was not released pending notification of family.

Emergency personnel responded after a passer-by at the Haviland Cove Recreation Area heard the woman calling for help around 12:55 p.m. Police and fire personnel found her about 30 feet from shore, and attempted unsuccessfully to throw a rope to her.

Police said Firefighter John Hoogeveen, wearing a flotation device attached to a safety line, crawled to the woman but the ice broke beneath him. He was able to grab the woman after she had gone under water, and both were pulled to shore.

Firefighters also were able to rescue two dogs that were in the water. They were picked up by the SPCA of Upstate New York.
