— A Fort Plain man who fled the scene of an accident in the Montgomery County town of Palatine was found drunk inside his car in a ditch another town over, according to a state police release issued today.

State police originally received a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of a property damage accident outside Tres Locos, a Mexican restaurant on Route 5 in Palatine. The vehicle had struck a sign in front of the restaurant and then fled the scene.

After a patrol of the area, troopers say they found 47-year-old Robert F. Sweet inside a vehicle in a ditch on Clinton Road in Canajoharie. They administered a standardized field sobriety test and found him to be intoxicated, according to the release.

Sweet was charged with felony DWI and misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was released on a ticket to appear in the Town of Canajoharie and Town of Palatine Courts on Thursday.
