Woman accused in $70K embezzlement scheme
BETHLEHEM Police say a Clifton Park woman embezzled more than $70,000 from her employer and then tried to bribe the company to keep it quiet.
Bethlehem police arrested Hillary A. Downey, 35, of Solomon Ave., after her employer reported missing funds had been covered up through fraudulent payroll records, police said in a news release issued today. She worked as account manager at Secure Solutions LLC, located at 316 Delaware Ave. in Delmar.
An investigation determined that Downey had been depositing money from the business into her personal account from October 2013 to February 2014, and that she later offered the business $10,000 to withhold information from the District Attorney’s office and not to pursue prosecution against her.
She was charged with second-degree grand larceny, a class C felony, fifth-degree criminal tax fraud and misdemeanor counts of compounding a crime.
Downey was arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail. She is scheduled to return to court Monday at 9 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
