— If a city’s face is its airport, then Albany just received $826,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation for a facelift.

The federal funding will cover the cost of replacing 33 terminal doors at Albany International Airport.

After jointly announcing the news, U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko each spoke to the importance of upgrading terminal doorways at the airport.

Gillibrand highlighted the energy saved by new doors that close quickly, “helping retain heat during the winter and cool air during the summer months.”

There’s also an aesthetic benefit from modernizing the airport. When business travelers and tourists step off their planes and walk into a well-maintained facility, they’ll be more likely to return to Albany, Shumer said.

Albany International Airport serves over one million passengers each year.
