East Greenbush casino plan gets a name
EAST GREENBUSH The proposed $300 million casino in East Greenbush will be called Capital View Casino & Resort, Saratoga Casino and Raceway and Churchill Downs announced Monday.
The 100,000-square-foot casino and eight-story hotel would be built to reflect the history of the town of East Greenbush. The operators teaming on the project released new renderings of the casino today.
“The entire project — including the property’s architecture and name — has been designed to incorporate the best of the region with a new, forward-looking approach that will benefit the entire region,” said Rita Cox, spokesperson for Saratoga Casino.
Cox said the casino’s architecture would complement the area’s Dutch heritage and complement the existing skyline, calling it a “beacon of economic development and tourism.”
The casino on Thompson Hill will be a Dutch Colonial building with ponds and streams around its perimeter. It will also feature gardens, including vegetable and herb gardens, and a walking path.
The operators also plan to partner with local businesses and community organizations looking to reap the benefits of the casino’s economic activity. The Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce is backing the project.
The East Greenbush Town Board unanimously passed a resolution of support for the proposed casino, despite a majority of local residents who voiced concerns during the Town Board meeting last week.
The $300 million project being pitched by the operators of Saratoga Casino and Raceway and Churchill Downs of Kentucky is expected to generate $24.1 million for the Capital Region and $5.7 million for East Greenbush and Rensselaer County.
