— A motorcyclist was killed early Saturday morning when he crashed into a street sweeper and his motorcycle caught fire.

Colonie police said Gary Charbonneau, 46, of Ballston Lake, was riding north on Route 9 near Crescent Terrace when he rear-ended a Chevrolet street sweeper driven by Boyie Maharaj, 55, of Schenectady, shortly before 1:50 a.m. The motorcycle caught fire as a result of the crash and was extinguished by responding emergency personnel, police said.

Charbonneau was pronounced dead at the scene by Albany County Coroner Paul Marra. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Maharaj, an employee of Russell Sweepers in Clifton Park, was cleaning the roadway in front of the Colonie landfill at the time of the crash, police said. He was taken to Ellis Hospital to be evaluated.

Route 9 was closed for several hours while police investigators processed the scene.
