Schenectady will take to the national stage today when the high school marching band steps off as New York’s representative in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

The band, fittingly named the Marching Patriots, just three years ago rose from the ashes of apathy to become one of the premier high school bands in the state. It has overcome many obstacles to get to this point, including leadership changes, not being practiced in marching band choreography and uniforms dating to the bands last incarnation in the 1980s.

But there they will be, stepping down Constitution Avenue in front of the National Mall shortly before noon today, playing for thousands of cheering people, all wearing red-white-and-blue.

Schenectady should be proud of what these students and their advisers have accomplished, especially in such a short time. Even prouder still are we to see our band representing our state in a celebration of our nation’s greatest accomplishment.
