“I liked the old place better,” joked James, a resident in the Schenectady YMCA’s housing program, as he proudly showed off his brand-new apartment Wednesday afternoon. Turning serious, the man, who declined to give his last name, praised the cleanliness and size of his new accommodations and kindness of the YMCA staff. “It’s just a wonderful place to be,” he said. There was a time in Rotterdam when residents knew it was 3:30PM. The Mica, Maqua, and Schenectady Chemical plants all chose this time to 'off gas' their buildings. We could all smell the admixture. This is a great repurposing of one of those buildings.

If the residential makeup of this building is as diverse as has been reported, I hope the more cognitively or emotionally challenged residents are receiving the attention and protection they need to be safe.
