Arrest made in shooting outside Schenectady convenience store

— A man has been charged with attempted murder in an April 19 shooting outside a convenience store on Van Vranken Avenue.

Thomas T. Burns, 43, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, all felonies, Schenectady police said.

The shooting occurred in front of 1685 Van Vranken Ave. At the time, police said Mervin A. Bingham, 22, was shot once around 10:32 p.m. Officers arrived to find him on the ground in front of the store. He was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital and later listed in stable condition.

Burns was also charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. He is being held in the Schenectady police pre-arraignment detention facility pending his arraignment before a City Court judge.
