Capital Region unemployment rate drops 1.9 percent

— The Capital Region’s unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in December 2013, down nearly 2 full percentage points from 7.3 percent one year earlier, according to preliminary data released today by the state Department of Labor.

The Capital Region’s rate put it just behind Ithaca and the suburban counties outside of New York City for the lowest unemployment rate in the state last month. The Ivy League metro of Ithaca had a 4.1 percent unemployment rate in December. Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester counties all had a 5.1 percent unemployment rate.

Saratoga County reported the lowest December unemployment rate in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metro at 5.1 percent, down from 5.2 percent one month earlier and down from 7 percent one year earlier.

Coming in next was Albany County, which boasted a 5.2 percent unemployment rate last month, down from 5.5 percent one month earlier and 7.1 percent one year earlier.

Rensselaer County had a 5.6 percent unemployment rate last month, down from 5.7 percent one month earlier and 7.5 percent one year earlier.

Schenectady County had a 5.8 percent unemployment rate in December 2013, down from 6 percent in November and 7.7 percent in December 2012.

Schoharie County’s unemployment rate rose from 7.1 percent in November 2013 to 7.3 percent in December 2013. Still, the rate had fallen 2.5 percentage points since December 2012 when it came in at 9.8 percent.

Just outside of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metro, Fulton and Montgomery counties reported stagnant unemployment rates of 7.8 percent from November to December. It was a drop from 10.5 percent in Fulton County one year earlier and a drop from 10.1 percent in Montgomery County one year earlier.
