Ballston Spa, Milton name new justices
SARATOGA COUNTY There will be new municipal justices sitting in both Ballston Spa and Milton next month.
The Ballston Spa Village Board on Monday appointed Michael Morrissey, a village public works laborer and former fire chief, to fill the vacancy created when Thomas Schroeder resigned.
The Milton Town Board, meanwhile, next month is expected to appoint one of its own, Councilman John Mancini, to the Milton Town Court vacancy.
Schroeder was the judge in both courts. He resigned as of Dec. 31 and is in the process of moving to North Carolina.
Ballston Spa Mayor John Romano said Morrissey, 49, was selected for the $15,964-salary position over one other applicant.
Morrissey is a fourth-generation Ballston Spa volunteer firefighter and former fire chief. He’s been a DPW laborer since 1998, but before that spent nine years as a Ballston Spa dispatcher. The Police Department and Village Court share the same building.
“That’s where I became familiar with the court,” he said.
Romano said the village attorney determined there was no conflict of interest between Morrissey’s two roles with the village.
He will run for the position in the March 18 village election.
In Milton, meanwhile, Mancini is expected to be appointed at next Wednesday’s Town Board meeting. The Milton town justice is paid $17,187 annually.
Town Supervisor Dan Lewza said the town Republican Committee has recommended Mancini, though nothing is official until the Town Board votes.
Mancini is a Ballston Spa native who is a lawyer with the New York Conference of Mayors. He was elected to the Town Board in 2009, and was re-elected last fall.
Assuming Mancini is appointed judge, Lewza said the Republican Committee will recommend a replacement on the Town Board, and the seat will probably be filled in February.
“I think John will be an excellent candidate and the town will benefit greatly from his experience,” Lewza said.
Mancini will need to run for the office in November.
