— The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the loss of one of its dog handlers, John Stevenson, who died Sunday after an illness.

“He was a great road deputy, a great K-9 handler, a great professional,” said Saratoga County Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo.

Stevenson, who was 61, joined the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department in October 2004, and worked until about two months ago, when he went on medical leave, Zurlo said.

Stevenson, who lived in Montgomery County, previously worked for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.

Saratoga County hired him as a road patrol officer, and in 2008 he became one of the department’s canine handlers, with a dog named “Rocky.”

He and the dog performed such duties as tracking lost children and suspects at burglary scenes.

Zurlo said he expects the Sheriff’s Department will provide an honor guard at Stevenson’s wake.
