Water main break closes Niskayuna Town Hall
NISKAYUNA A water main break forced the closure of Niskayuna Town Hall Wednesday, officials said.
The break was discovered just outside the building, sending water bubbling up and into a nearby catch basin, town Supervisor Joe Landry said.
Town officials quickly shut off water to the building and sent about 30 town workers home for the day. The police department, which is housed in the same building, remained open, with officials making arrangements to keep them working there despite lack of running water, Landry said.
Town workers and equipment were sent to fix the break, with that expected to be complete Wednesday evening, Landry said. Town Hall is expected to reopen Thursday morning.
As to how it happened, Landry suspected the cold temperatures overnight caused the grown to shift, damaging the pipe. The pipe itself is believed to be as old as the Town Hall itself, which turns 20 years old this year.
