FirstLight Fiber names Kraemer CFO, senior VP

ALBANY — FirstLight Fiber, a telecommunications service providing fiber optic networks in upstate New York and northern New England, has appointed Gary Kraemer as its new chief financial officer and senior vice president, effective immediately.

Kraemer will assume the CFO role previously held by Sean Socha. After three successful years as CFO for FirstLight, Socha is relocating back to his hometown to care for his extended family.

Kraemer’s experience includes senior finance and CFO positions with multiple technology companies, including Data General, Bay Networks, Sandburst Corp. and Moldflow.

At FirstLight, Kraemer will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of finance and accounting, human resources, legal and regulatory functions.

Prior to FirstLight, Kraemer was vice president and CFO of Fidelis Security Systems from 2008 until its recent acquisition by General Dynamics.

He earned an MBA from Rider University and holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Susquehanna University. He is also a certified public accountant.

Law firm adds Fischer as associate

ALBANY — Whiteman Osterman & Hanna, a Capital Region law firm, has welcomed Myles B. Fischer as a new associate.

Fischer will join the Estate Planning and Administration and Federal and State Taxation practice groups at the law firm.

Fischer advises clients in estate planning, taxation, asset protection planning, estate and trust administration and settlement.

He currently serves on the board of directors for the Tri-County United Way and assists the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

Fischer obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School and earned his Master of Laws in Taxation with a Certificate of International Taxation from the University of Miami. He also received a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Albany.

Rider earns fraud protection honor

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, a provider of anti-fraud training and education, has awarded certified public accountant Allison Rider of Albany the globally preferred Certified Fraud Examiner credential.

In order to become a CFE, Rider met a stringent set of criteria and passed a rigorous exam administered by the ACFE.

She has successfully met the ACFE’s character, experience and education requirements for the CFE credential and has demonstrated knowledge in four areas critical to the fight against fraud.

Rider is currently team leader for Scott, Stackrow & Co. PC in Troy.

Rohan joins AMC surgery department

ALBANY — Dr. Darren Rohan has joined Albany Medical Center’s Department of Surgery.

Formerly the chief of thoracic surgery at HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley, Rohan has special expertise in thoracic and general surgery.

Board certified in both general and thoracic surgery, Rohan completed his fellowship training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New Hyde Park and served his residency at Boston Medical Center.

He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Walsh hired by state retail council

ALBANY — Alison Walsh has joined The Retail Council of New York State as government relations associate.

Walsh will help manage the council’s government relations program, tracking and analyzing legislation and working with lawmakers and staff on a wide variety of issues affecting council members.

Prior to joining the council, Walsh served as assistant director of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Councils, where she coordinated all aspects of the councils and their funding mechanism. Previously, she was an associate at CGK Partners, a government relations and political consulting firm in New York City, and worked as finance director for the New York State Democratic Committee in 2010. Walsh also served as deputy finance director on Melinda Katz’s 2009 New York City comptroller campaign.

Walsh earned her master’s degree in elections and campaign management from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and her bachelor’s degree in political science from Providence College. She lives in Albany.

Mirkovic Teal adds Clark as adviser

ALBANY — Jeffrey T. Clark recently joined the Mirkovic Teal Group, a local financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial in Albany, as a financial adviser.

Clark has been practicing financial planning in Saratoga Springs for 19 years.

Also, Megan Naples and Kelly Hoag of the Mirkovic Teal Group have passed the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor exam.

Mirkovic Teal Group’s main office is on Wolf Road in Albany, and the group maintains satellite offices in Saratoga Springs, Gloversville and Cobleskill.
