SCHENECTADY A total of 10 Schenectady residents have been charged in a scam to illegally get valid New York State drivers’ licenses, police said.
The 10 are accused of using fraudulent documents indicating that they had previously had valid drivers’ licenses in Puerto Rico. With those documents, they were then able to get valid New York licenses, based on their supposed previous licenses, authorities said.
In each case, the false documents worked and they received valid licenses, police said.

In six of the cases where court records were available Friday, the individuals are accused of passing the fake documents between March and August 2012.
The actual documents they are accused of faking were driving abstracts from Puerto Rico supposedly issued by the commonwealth’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, according to papers.
The investigation was conducted by detectives from the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Schenectady police helped those investigators arrest those charged.
All 10 were charged with one count each of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, both felonies. They were arraigned Friday afternoon in Schenectady City Court.
