— A man chased his stolen car from Rensselaer to Colonie, through the closed gates at Siena College and on into campus, until the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed, Colonie police said.

The incident started around 2 a.m., police said.

“He hears his car start up and just jumps into his other car,” Colonie police Lt. Robert Winn said. “He is pursuing his own car but he has no way to call police. He just jumps into his car, he doesn’t take his cellphone.”

The stolen car crashed through two sets of gates at Siena College, hit the pursuing vehicle and smashed into a tree, according to police and Siena officials.

The driver of the stolen vehicle got out and fled on foot.

“The first we heard of it was from Siena,” Winn said.

Police arrived and tried to track the man using a K-9, but couldn’t find him.

“So he’s on the lam,” Winn said, adding that the man faces charges of stealing the car and damaging Siena’s gates.
