Clifton Park, Halfmoon seek to relieve Sitterly Road traffic
CLIFTON PARK & HALFMOON The towns of Clifton Park and Halfmoon are asking traffic engineers to look at ways to relieve congestion at the west end of Sitterly Road, one of the main connections between the two towns.
Both town boards this week are expected to approve resolutions to hire M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying of Clifton Park to look at traffic conditions in the area between Woodin Road and Clifton Park Center Road, where the two-lane road is used by an estimated 15,000 vehicles per day. “This is a great first step for both towns and their residents,” said Halfmoon Supervisor Kevin Tollisen.
M.J. Engineering will be paid up to $4,000 — $2,000 by each town — to come up with ideas to address the congestion on Sitterly, which leads to traffic backups at several locations.
Ideas already being suggested include synchronizing the traffic lights at Woodin Road and Crossing Boulevard, which are only a few hundred feet apart. Another idea that’s been suggested is adding turn lanes.
The initial study could be used as a basis to seek federal funding for a fuller engineering study through the Capital District Transportation Committee, which manages federal transit funding for the region.
Sitterly Road is a major connector between the two towns. It links residential areas to Route 9 and to the commercial area around the Clifton Park Center Mall. Also, the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Emergency Corps is located on Crossing Boulevard, and Ellis Medicine’s urgent care center is located near Sitterly and Clifton Park Center Road.
Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett said it makes sense for the towns to collaborate to look at the road’s congestion.
M.J. will also develop recommendations to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. The close proximity of retail outlets to the residential areas along Sitterly Road results in many pedestrians and bicyclists using this busy stretch of road, town officials said.
