Shenendehowa senior Levi Ashley, second in the Division I state tournament at 195 last winter, is the lone No. 1 seed among Section II wrestlers for the 12th annual Eastern States Classic, which opens today at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake.

Ashley is one of six Shenendehowa wrestlers to be seeded for the two-day event, which will feature wrestlers from 132 schools representing six states, including tourney newcomers Clovis West of California and St. Benedict’s State of Newark, N.J. Connecticut state champ Danbury also returns.

State DII champ Luis Weierbach of Hoosick Falls (120 pounds), DI finalist Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam (138), DI bronze medalist Joey Butler of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (145), DII finalist Nick Gallo of Schalmont (182) and Colonie 285-pounder Austin DiCerbo all seeded second.

Ashley was fourth at the Eastern States last year and seventh in 2012; Lapi, a three-time state placerm had three top-five showings at the ESC. Butler, Gallo, DiCerbo, Queensbury’s Franky Nassivera, and Colonie’s Wayne Burt (195) and Golan Cohen (113) all placed last winter.

Nassivera (170) and Burt and Columbia’s Angelo Kress (152) all are seeded fourth. Kevin Parker (138) and Jesse Porter (152) of Shenendehowa drew No. 5 seeds, as did Duanesburg’s Connor Lawrence (160).

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake has four other projected top-eight finishers in Christian Gramuglia (99), Jake Achcraft (170), Anthony Papa (182) and Nico Fragale (220). The other projected top-eight Section II finishers are Cohen, Columbia’s John McHugh (132), Shaker senior Blake Retell (126) and Geno Brancati (170) of Hudson Falls.

Weierbach, who has committed to Army, was put behind reigning state DI champ Nick Piccinni of Ward Melville; Lapi was seeded second to DI runner-up Tristan Rifanburgh of Norwich; two-time California state champ Chris Garcia is seeded ahead of Butler; Gallo is behind fellow DII runner-up Christian Dietrich of Greene (Section IV); and DiCerbo’s projected finals opponent is state DII fifth-place finisher Connor Calkins of Alfred-Almond (Section V).

Shenendehowa and Burnt Hills both have six seeded wrestlers, Columbia has five, and Schalmont, Duanesburg, Colonie and Salem all have three.
