It's a good weekend for the blues
Friday night blues
Friday is a night for the blues, as Holly & Evan and the Jimmy Graham Band join forces in a Capital Region Blues Showcase at Fuller Roadhouse Grille in Albany.
Based in Amsterdam, Holly & Evan — Holly Taormina on guitar and vocals and Evan Conway on upright bass, along with drummer Bob Morris — have been performing original music together for four years, pushing the boundaries of traditional blues by mixing in a touch of jazz and soul.
The event is a fundraiser to send both bands to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.
Music starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 and the event is for those 21 and older. For more information, call 489-3170 or go to www.fullerroadhousegrille.com.
And more blues
For a little more blues, head to Katie O’Byrne’s in Schenectady on Saturday to hear Collette and the Mudcats.
The Mudcats describe themselves as a “rockin’ blues band” that covers both modern and traditional blues tunes. Fronted by singer Collette Blessing, the band includes Steve Pastore on lead guitar and vocals, Joe McDowell on bass and vocals and Colin Kelly on drums.
Katie O’Byrne’s Irish pub and restaurant is at 121 Wall St. Call 395-5999 or go to katieobyrnespub.com
The North & South Dakotas, who released the EP “Long Time Coming” a few months ago, are heading back to the studio this month to begin work on another record.
The folksy band (formerly Headband Jack) is made up of Zack Hay and Mark Retajczyk on guitar and vocals; Colin Hunt on bass; Mike Graves on drums and vocals; and Nayt Patenaude on mandolin, dobro and vocals.
You can catch them tonight and Saturday at Putnam Den in Saratoga Springs. Tonight’s show begins at 9:30 and is free.
Saturday’s show begins at 7 p.m. and includes The Remainders and the High Peaks Band. The show is a benefit and celebration of the life of Jerelle Long, a Saratoga Springs native who died last month after a battle with lymphedema. The cover charge is $15 and a silent auction will be held to benefit Long’s wife and two children.
Putnam Den is at 63A Putnam St. in Saratoga Springs. Call 584-8066 or go to putnamden.com.
