Sabres' Gallo named first-team all-state
Schalmont inside linebacker Nick Gallo was named to the all-state Class B first-team defense after anchoring a unit that posted six shutouts and surrendered 16 points in the regular season.
Gallo led the 12-1 Sabres with 116 tackles, more than twice as many as any other Schalmont player, and the junior added to his resume that includes the Section II Class B West Division co-Player of the Year and Daily Gazette All-Area Defensive Player of the Year awards.
Gallo made four solo tackles, assisted on nine tackles and forced a fumble in Schalmont’s 22-21 state title-game loss to Maine-Endwell. The Sabres’ quarterback also ran for two touchdowns at the Carrier Dome and was tabbed the game’s Most Valuable Offensive Back.
Gallo helped Schalmont win its fourth Section II championship in five years and its sixth straight West Division title.
The three-year varsity performer is joined by Lansingburgh running back Anthony Walker, a Class B first-team repeater on the offensive side of the ball.
New York State Sportswriters Association all-state first-team recognition also went to small-school standouts Tyler River of Chatham (Class C, offensive end), Levi Brewster of Hoosick Falls (Class C, defensive back), John Barnes of Greenwich (Class D, running back) and Isaac Isom of Salem (Class D, defensive back).
Section II’s Class B group includes Devon Willis of Schalmont (running back, second team), Larry Messer of Schuylerville (offensive line, second team), Pierre LaPort of Broadalbin-Perth (defensive line, second team), Marcus Ramundo of Schalmont (defensive line, second team), Dan Zeglen of Scotia-Glenville (quarterback, third team), Kevin Paskevich of Schalmont (offensive line, third team), Jack Batchler of Schalmont (linebacker, third team), Carter DuCatte of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (linebacker, third team) and Jelani Hoyte-King of Albany Academy (defensive back, third team).
