College Hockey: Rau lifts Gophers over Engineers, 6-2

— Kyle Rau scored twice, including the game-winner 1:19 into the second period, sparking top-ranked Minnesota to a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the third-place game of the Mariucci Classic on Saturday.

Rau’s first goal came 58 seconds after Travis Boyd scored to give the Gophers (13-2-3) a 2-1 lead. Justin Kloos scored at 6:49 in the second to make it 4-1.

Matt Neal pulled the Engineers (8-8-4) within 4-2 6:57 into the third period. But Rau put the game away on a power-play goal with 8:42 left.

Seth Ambroz added an empty-net goal with 2:31 remaining.

Brock Higgs gave RPI a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal with 4:03 left in the first period. Connor Reilly tied it for the Gophers with 43 seconds left in the first.

RPI is 0-3-1 in its last four games.

SCHENECTADY — Sophomore goalie Madeline Dahl made 48 saves in her first start of the season, helping the Dutchwomen to a non-conference tie against the Tigers at Messa Rink.

Dahl was sharp in the first period, when she stopped 26 shots.

Jessica Kaminsky scored in the first for Union (7-12-1). Marissa Maugeri tallied for RIT (9-11-2) midway through the third period.
