3 die in separate pond, lake drownings in rural NY
HARPERSFIELD — Authorities say a couple and a third person have drowned this week in separate incidents just miles apart in the same rural upstate New York county.
State police say 74-year-old Ira Landess and his 71-year-old wife Nancy Klinger-Landess both died after apparently trying to rescue their dog Tuesday when it fell through ice on a pond behind their home in the Delaware County town of Harpersfield, 50 miles southwest of Albany.
Police divers recovered Landess's body late Tuesday night. His wife's body was found Wednesday afternoon. The dog's body was also recovered.
Police say a search was launched late Tuesday night in the neighboring town of Davenport for 74-year-old Marvin Taub of Oneonta after he didn't return from walking his neighbor's dogs. Firefighters found his body in Pine Lake on Hartwick College's environmental campus. The dogs were OK.
